Settling of land/Liquefaction?

I nearly forgot to comment on something that I noticed when checking out the Heathcote River track. I didn't want to add it to one of my other blogs as I think it is important, and I can look back and see if I was correct, or completely duh!

Have just had a workmate down from Wellington who stayed with us for two nights. And of course, I just had to take him across the road to my favourite track 'Beri-Ford' (Heathcote towpath)....We were actually going over to look for someone, as there had been a death that day nearby, and just wanted to check if everything was ok.......

As we were walking along I was telling Andrew (Workmate) that the ground was very soft, and lateral spread had continued (Yeah I know it makes me sound like I know what I'm talking about) :).............

Walking over near a building which has its foundations were exposed and liquefaction had taken its toll, I noticed the ground felt firmer. Actually each place I checked and went to show him how soft and fragile it was, it made a liar of me.

Even the parts along near the roundabout felt firmer, and thats including along the edge of the bigger cracks.

When we got back home I was just talking about how spongey my front lawn is, and the garden has areas that are so soft when you stand there you feel yourself move slightly down. But I was stopped half thru the sentence as I noticed my garden seemed harder. The lawn has lots of bumps etc but that didn't really feel spongey like it had in the last year.

Last weekend I noticed that some pretty big cracks on the other side of the river seemed solid, compacting the cracks together or squishing the fallen debri into a solid ground.

If that is the case, it would be the settlement of the land acting like its on speed, and it would be the happiest news! Looks like the lighter that was in my bra and fell down one of the larger cracks won't be spewed back up via liquefaction, oh well, whats a lighter between us.

Come on Mother Nature, I'm coming back over this weekend to see if you have toughened up :)
